The concert will consist of Mozart’s Quintet in E flat Major for Piano and Winds K.452, and the Schumann Quintet in E flat Major for Piano and Strings, played by the world-class Festival Orchestra’s principal players, joined by pianists Miles Graber and Carolyn Steinbuck.

Mozart wrote his only piano quintet at the height of his powers, when he was 28 years old.  He had never before attempted a piece for such a combination of instruments: bassoon, clarinet, horn and oboe. He wrote to his father, “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.”  For Schumann, it was the first time a piano was combined with what is now known as a string quartet (substituting cello for double bass). The quintet is considered one of the major works of nineteenth century chamber music.
